Stone Restorations provide specialist stonemasonry and heritage building services to Metropolitan and Regional NSW. We have delivered a wide range of projects from minor residential repairs to large scale commercial, ecclesiastical & government restoration projects. Stone Restorations clients include a range of building companies, both the public and private school sectors, The NSW Public Works Advisory, NSW Department of Planning & Environment (Heritage Stoneworks), The Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Presbyterian Church, Uniting Church, Sydney Trains Transport NSW & The National Trust of Australia.

We have the capacity to undertake projects as a principal contractor or as specialist subcontractor. Our business endeavours to provide the highest quality heritage restoration service, with a view to preserve the limited built heritage within Australia. Stone Restorations prioritises the safety and ongoing support of its employees by investing in modern technologies and providing ongoing training to our staff. Stone Restorations received recognition from the National trust of Australia in the 2021 National Trust Heritage awards, winning the ‘Conservation Built Heritage’ category for our involvement in the Restoration of the cathedral of St Michael & St John, Bathurst.

History

Stone Restorations was founded by Ron Lodewijks in 1989, whose career commenced in 1980 as an apprentice with Gosford Quarries. For over 40 years Ron has worked on and managed a wide range of restoration projects throughout New South Wales, some of which include the Queen Victoria Building, The Department of Education, Central Railway Station, St Andrews Cathedral, Bathurst Courthouse, The Cathedral of Sts Michael & St John, Bathurst and St Mary’s Church Mudgee. Ron was recognised in the 2019 National Trust Heritage awards, receiving the heritage skills award for his contribution to Stonemasonry in Australia.

Stone Restorations employs a highly dedicated team of Stonemasons, Carpenters & Labourers to effectively deliver a wide range of restoration projects. We continue to look forward to opportunities to work on heritage buildings throughout NSW and preserve this heritage for generations to come.

Newington College Founders Building Façade Restoration

This project involved the restoration of the sandstone gable end of Prescott Hall in the Founders building at Newington College. Project scope included cutting out and repointing of 100% of deteriorated joints, replacing and indented string moulds, hood moulds, ashlar stones and floral bosses. Stone Restorations were also engaged to access and dismantle a severely deteriorated sandstone chimney which was in danger of collapse. Dimensions and templates of the stone chimney were taken with all stone shaped off site. We then rebuilt the chimney to its exact original dimensions, pointed and cleaned the sandstone.

Junee Station Accessibility Upgrade

Stone Restorations was engaged By Joss group to assist in delivering the Accessibility upgrades at Junee Railway station. Over the years the original sandstone veranda was poorly patched over many times, and eventually damaged beyond repair. Stone Restorations laid 36 new sandstone slabs which not only improved accessibility to the railway station for all, but reinstated an important heritage feature of this historic Railway station.

Ilford Sheep Station

A priority of the clients on this project was that their home feature natural materials from the local area. Stone Restorations utilised basalt fieldstone from the property to construct feature gable walling to the main house and a large shed. We completed several sample walls to give the client the ability to select the exact finish that they wanted. Sandstone quoins and solid hardwood beams helped complete the feature walls.

Bathurst Courthouse

Stone Restorations was engaged by Rapid Constructions to assist in delivering the restoration of the historic Bathurst Courthouse designed by celebrated colonial architect James Barnett. Our scope for this project consisted of the replacement of over 50 tonnes of shaped sandstone, in the form of full replacement & stone indents, repointing of 100% stonework, application of synthetic stone patching, installation of lead damp proof course below new base course stonework, repointing of approx 10% of the brickwork and a complete façade clean. This project involved collaboration with Heritage Stoneworks, the NSW government public works advisory, structural engineers & heritage architects.
